Mullet - hot hairstyle for 2009

mullet hairstyleI know, I know: when you here mullet you get goose bumps! But the mullet I am talking about is nothing like McGyver's or Kim Wilde's. This season mullet is getting an update!

Mullet "how to's":
The cut is pretty straight forward: your stylist should thin out hair at the top, leaving few longer sections falling over the shoulders. Make sure that your stylist uses a razor - this way the cut will last longer.
Styling: Mullet looks great when it's a bit messy so go for pomades and matt finish wax like TIGI Catwalk Catfight Texturizer.
Is it for you? Mullet works best for girls with fine, supple hair. (I deliberately say girls - men should stay away from this hairstyle!) Mullet suits best oval faces and long necks. Hair Craft recommends soft make-up to go with it - you don't want to look like you just escaped from the set of "Life on Mars" :)

Medium length hair ideas - braids

braidsBraids are one of most popular hair trends in 2008. So if are bored with your ponytail or want to give your old up do a new twist braid might be just the thing you're after!

You want need any special salon tools to pull that one off, all you need is a brush and two hands! Some people with curly or very long hair might find it easier to braid hair when it's slightly damp.
Making a Dutch braid other known as French braid, is easier than it seems. To achieve "hair crown":

1. Divide a small section of hair where you want the braid to start into three even sections and comb them over.
2. Cross the sections as when making a normal braid and pull them to tighten the braid.
3. Using the pointed end of a rat tail comb, lift a small section of hair on the right by drawing a line against the scalp from the hairline to the middle of the braid.
4. Add the new section of hair to the existing section on the right and then cross it over the middle section; tighten the plait.
5. Repeat that but on the opposite side.
6. Continue the process alternating right and left sections over the middle section, tightening each plait as you make it, until you reach the hairline. Secure the end of the braid with a hair-safe ponytail holder or continue weaving a normal braid to the ends of the hair.

Jared-Leto-Men-hairstyle-bobIf you believed that bob hairstyle is reserved for the women only, think twice! Some of the hottest men out there are getting their locks sheared, shaped and flat-ironed into the feminine flip!
"Men-Bob" is a perfect look for those guys who don’t like the short look. This hairstyle is good for hair that is medium to thick in texture and works well with straight or wavy hair. This men’s haircut is simply a longer version of the classic men’s cut with the layers remaining longer all around the head.
The sides and back are also left longer to blend with the top. The bangs in this style are usually a full bang that sits on the forehead but are slightly swept to one side. A side part works best with this men’s hair cut. To style, use gel or a shape creator on damp hair and blow dry your hair while styling it with your fingers. The key to this hairstyle is to give it a slightly messy appearance. You want to avoid a structured look so use your hands to style instead of a brush.
If your hair tends to poof a lot when blowdried, only dry hair until it is still slightly damp. Let it dry naturally the rest of the way.

Etro dreadlockcsWhen I hear: dreadlocks I think: dandruff. I think: itchy scalp. And if that is not enough you have to cut your hair really short, once you had enough of the above! But after watching Etro and Jean Paul Gaultier's shows I might change my mind...

First of: forget Bob Marley. This spring/summer hot hair texture is all about glamour and grange: hair is a mess, but a very well conditioned mess.
Below you'll find tips on creating the look from Sam McKnight and Malcolm Edwards - stylists responsible for hair at Balmain and Burberry shows.

Glam dreadlocks "how to's"
1. Condition your hair night before styling - use something like Pro-V Smooth & Silk Intensive Treatment Conditioner
2. This season we like volume - use a volumising mouse like Volume Lift Mousse by L'oreal on freshly washed, dump hair. This will give your hair thickness and provide base to hold texture.
3. Don't overdo it with a hair dryer! Blow-dry your hair but make sure that the natural kinks and waves are still there - they will add to "modern gypsy" look.
4. Take a small section of hair and twist it from the root down. Hold onto the end and, with your free hand, rub your fingers up and down from tip to root to create friction. Crated "dread" spray with a medium-hold spray. Repeat at random - the effect should be uneven. For the softer look use climpers - apply them diagonally across small sections of blow-dried hair for few seconds.
5. For added effect were sections of hair tightly plaited for the pirate look - think Johny Depp in "Pirates of the Caribbean".
...and after the night out, simply wash your dreads off -no scissors necessary!

Naomi Campbell flower accessoriesThis spring and summer Alice bands, hair bands and tiaras are competing with shoes and handbags for the top spot in fashionista’s hearts. If you still don't own an oversized flower hair clip or 60's style head scarves, you are tres, tres de mode.
Accessories "how to's"."
Possibilities are endless: from extra feminine floral hair bands, butterfly hair pins to glamorous jewelled bandos and diadems...If you not sure, what to go for, think what you need. If you just bought a gorgeous leopard print shoes, why not to get hair clips to match? Retro sunglasses will go perfectly with head scarf. Big nigh out? Why not skip the bling earrings and add a bit of sparkle to your hair?
Remember though: if you're decide to draw attention to your head you might want to "under dress" a little - give up really loud top, etc. After all: sometimes less is more!

Pink with pink highlightsBelieve it or not, but spring is almost here. Don’t you just feel like it’s time to shed these thick coats you’ve been wearing all winter? swap your boots for sandals? get new colour for your boring mouse-brown/dirty-blond hair? Yes, yes and yes! Spring – summer 2008 hairstyles are all about colours especially colour highlights!
Colour in your hair is something not only for punks and kids; girls all over the world follow footsteps of Pink adding not only pink but purple, blue and orange in their hair! Josh Wood, colourist to many A-list stars, is a great fan of this new trend and recommends this new approach to hair colouring to many of his clients in his Chelsea salon. “Colour highlights give hair multi-tonal colour with fresh, modern edge, bringing your hair to life with tones ranging from the subtle to the extreme.”

Is it for me?Avril Lavigne with super funky red highlights
Josh suggests that blonde is ideal base for this spring/summer colour orgy. But why would blondes get all the fun?! Remember though that if your hair is rather dark you might not get these bright tones you are hoping for. Your haircut is another thing to consider: the rule of a thumb says short hair like pixie may not look at its best with loads of highlights - in stead of funky you end up looking like a hen...If you have a short hairstyle apply colour only to one section of your hair and colour the rest with complementing shade.
If your hair is medium to long, highlights, especially around the face can be very flattering.

But I'm scared!
If you want to follow the trends but at the same time you're worried about the consequences, why not to try highlights extensions? This way you can have all the fun with the colour without having to worry about what your boss will say on Monday...
